Meet Coach Ryan: Your Guide to the Next Evolution of Your Performance

Driven by an urge to stretch his own limits and a love of seeing humans thrive in competitive environments, sports have been a lifelong fascination for Coach Ryan.

RYAN’S STORY

Ryan’s relationship with sport began early in life. Growing up, he found that sports provided a sense of belonging, an opportunity to challenge himself, and a place to channel his competitive spirit. His personal playing career included ice hockey, baseball and football, the latter of which he played through college.

After a brief step away from sport post-college, Ryan felt the pull back—this time as a coach. While searching for what his role within coaching may be, he remembered the incredible impact the Strength & Conditioning Coaches he was fortunate to be coached by had on his life. With his sights set on becoming a strength coach, Ryan earned his Master of Education in Applied Kinesiology with an emphasis in Sport and Exercise Science from University of Minnesota. While earning his Masters, Ryan was also an intern within the Gopher Athletic Performance department, gaining experience working with a wide variety of athletes and coaches.

After graduating early and with honors, he went on to be the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach at Augsburg University, where he oversaw the year-round development of approximately 550 athletes competing across 21 sports. During his time at Augsburg, Ryan’s presence had a measurable impact. In his final year there, the athletic department experienced one of its most successful years in school history, setting a record for the number of teams reaching the playoffs. More important than record setting results was how the athletes felt.

“We were very lucky to have [Coach Ryan] as a strength and conditioning coach. I have played college baseball and football at a total of 4 different colleges and have never seen a strength and conditioning coach at the level of [Coach Ryan] when it comes to knowledge, detail and many other qualities... I am currently in the middle of his offseason program and am in the best shape I have ever been in. What is also amazing is his abilities to care for his athletes."

Ryan’s path next took him overseas, following his ridiculously talented wife Kylie to Amsterdam when she landed a once-in-a-lifetime job opportunity. While in the Netherlands, Ryan served as Strength & Conditioning Coach for the 1st Men’s Team of Pinoké, a professional field hockey club competing in the highest domestic league in the world. He also worked at several gyms in Amsterdam where he trained individual athletes and private clients.

One of the main goals that Pinoké tasked Ryan with was to help reduce injuries, which had decimated their roster the previous season. After revamping the off-field training, implementing a load-management system, and anchoring Motor Control Restoration sessions into the training routine, injury rates plummeted. In the first season working with Ryan, Pinoké did not have a single player miss a game due to a soft-tissue, non-contact injury. In the second season, the team was in a playoff spot before the season was cut short due to COVID.

Ryan also trained a handful of athletes competing in various sports, including a few elite women’s field hockey players who played in the women’s side of the league. In his first season ever working with field hockey players, Ryan supported the top goal scorers on both the men’s and women’s sides of the league.

Living and coaching in Europe expanded Ryan’s perspective even further. He worked alongside athletes and coaches from around the world, including Olympians and national-team players from multiple countries. During this time, he also trained private clients, presented at international conferences, starred in an episode of House Hunters International and taught at The Hague University of Applied Sciences.

Combined with his work in the U.S., Ryan has now coached well over 100 sport seasons across a wide range of competitive environments.

Ryan and Kylie eventually returned to the United States after Ryan sustained a concussion. Like most people, especially athletes, Ryan was no stranger to pain- having lived with near-daily migraines for years already. This time, however, he encountered issues that simply could not be pushed through. His healing journey became an important turning point, leading him to deepen his understanding of the interconnected nature of the human body and the power of resilience.

Since he started coaching, Ryan has pursued learning in a wide range of areas. His fascination with human movement led him to earn multiple certifications in Motor Control Restoration, and he is currently developing his own innovative methods of improving movement efficiency. His drive for self-improvement and desire to aid others led him to become a certified Family & Systemic Constellations Facilitator, including specialized training in applying systemic work within organizations. He is also a major fan of history and can often be found with a headphone in, listening to a history podcast.

Ryan is relentlessly curious and committed to growth—in himself and in others. At Time & Space Coaching, he brings together the most impactful tools he’s discovered so far to help athletes and coaches break invisible chains and evolve their performance to levels they didn’t know possible.
